Despite an impassioned nomination speech by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio failed to secure the votes needed to grant him the speakership.
Ahead of the Friday vote, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York spoke in opposition to Congressman Jordan. Congressman Jeffries, who was nominated to be Speaker by the minority party, received the votes of all members of his party in the House.
Those who oppose Representative Jordan have claimed they are unwilling to change their minds, yet Representative Jordan has not indicated that he will drop out of the race.
Party members are meeting behind closed doors, seeking consensus on what comes next.
Speaker pro tempore, Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, did not receive the needed votes to act as an interim speaker through January 3, although he said he remains willing to do so if formally authorized.
